Reports out today: S. Korea has successfully altered the genes of a cat so that it glows in the dark. We’ll not exactly in the dark, but it does glow red when exposed to UV light. Yea, pretty much scared of that. Don’t think I’d like to turn the corner some night and see my cat glowing. (Though I’m not sure why I’d be wearing the infared goggles that make the cat “glow” red.)
What’s most interesting about this article is how they changed the cat.
To clone the cats the team used skin cells of the mother cat and modified its genes to make them fluorescent by using a virus, which was transplanted into the ova.
Hmm… Is this really about helping cure diseases, as the article states, or is this more about developing a virus that you could infect opposing troops with that would make them stand out under UV light? Not sure about that one.
